The War of the Bucket
The war was a rather silly one between Modena and Bologna, rival city-states in Italy. It all started in 1325, when a band of Modena soldiers raided Bologna and stole a large wooden bucket. Bologna, wishing to secure both its bucket and its pride, declared war. The war raged on for twelve years, and the number of people who died to retrieve the bucket is unknown. To this day the bucket is still stored in Modena’s bell tower.
